Birchbox September 2017 Review/Unboxing

Is it really September? This year it looks like Summer passed us by in the UK, can someone make sure a heat-wave is ordered for next Summer please?! However, one good thing about it being September is the arrival of a new Birchbox and this time it’s in collaboration with Oliver Bonas. The theme is “Work hard, play hard and be kind”.

We were given an option for box design this month and I went for ‘The Lucinda’. There was also an option to upgrade your box by adding an exclusive Oliver Bonas tin candle for £9 (usual price £12). Unfortunately I couldn’t justify an extra £9, especially without knowing if I would definitely like the fragrance.

Oliver Bonas have included a 15% discount voucher in the box which is a nice little touch although I don’t quite feel the same about the sticker set I found lurking at the bottom… is it just me who hasn’t caught onto this sticker trend??

So let’s see what I got…

ARROW BOOST Colour Enhancing Lip Balm – Full size | RRP £11

So my first item is an Arrow lip balm. It claims to ‘adjust to your unique pH to create the perfect, just-for-you hue’. Hmm, let’s face it, it’s just a lip balm. It does have a hint of colour to it, slightly pinky/orange I would say. My favourite thing about it is the scent, not something I have come across before but I’m guessing it’s from the ‘mango seed butter’.

Polaar IcyMagic Instant Eye Contour Energiser – Full size | RRP £22

A product in everyone’s box this month – the roll-on eye energiser from Polaar. It’s a sample size of 10ml so should last for a few applications. I’m not someone who suffers from under-eye bags but I think everyone can use a boost sometimes so I’ll definitely give it a try.

Beauty Protector Protect and Detangle – RRP £18.50

This is probably my favourite item in this month’s box and I’m looking forward to using it. Protect and Detangle is a multi-purpose leave-in spray. It claims to condition, detangle, minimise frizz, protect colour and add shine to your hair. I don’t like having a lot of different products in my hair so an all-in-one sounds great to me and the scent is gorgeous!

Dr. PawPaw Original Clear Balm – RRP £6.95

Yes… another balm! This does claim to be a multi-purpose balm which can be used on lips or as a moisturiser. It will smooth split ends and soothe sunburn. It’s made up of natural ingredients such as fermented pawpaw, aloe vera and olive oil and is fragrance free. It definitely has a lip balm consistency so I can’t see myself using it as a moisturiser.

Manna Kadar Fantasy 3-in-1 Blush, Highlighter, Eyeshadow – Full size | RRP £15

This was the product we knew would be in the September box because there was a sneak peek last month. I’ve got to say, I was expecting more of a high end feel from this after reading that Manna Kadar claims to be a ‘prestige line of products’ with ‘the finest ingredients’… Main ingredient of this product – talc. Not something that bothers me greatly, but it’s just something I’d expect from a typical drug store brand, particularly with the basic plastic packaging so not sure it would be worth £15. This being said, I will definitely give it a go, I think it will make a lovely, shimmery eye-shadow for a natural look. It would also be nice for the days when you don’t want either a strong blush or highlight look, it’s just something in-between that can be kept subtle.

I’m pretty disappointed with this month’s selection and I can’t really believe that I was given two balms, such an oversight by Birchbox in my opinion! Especially when their promotional images show that some boxes will have received a sample Benefit lipstick which would have felt like much better value.

It’s likely that I’m going to try a different beauty box next month so I’ll make it my mission to check out lots of reviews/unboxings to see which looks like the best value for money. Let me know what your favourite beauty subscription box is.

Thanks for reading!
