I was recently given the opportunity to test out the Olay Daily Facials water-activated dry cloths through Savvy Circle. If you haven’t heard of Savvy Circle before, it’s part of the Supersavvyme website which was created by Proctor & Gamble and is a way for them to promote their range of brands and products. If you register for Savvy Circle, you are given the opportunity to become an ambassador and can apply for a wide range of projects in order to test and keep products for free. If this sounds like you’re kind of thing, head over to their website – https://circle.supersavvyme.co.uk/uk/
Olay Daily Facials claims to be a 5-in-1 product that replaces the need for a visit to the spa! It’s best suited to normal/dry skin and they also sell a sensitive version which is fragrance free.
Cleanses away dirt, oil and impurities
Improves the look of the skin
Preserves moisture to soften and condition
The first thing I noticed when I opened the packaging was the gorgeous scent which I’m guessing comes from the grapeseed and aloe vera extracts. The cloths are quite large and as soon as you run them under water they begin to lather up. The idea is that you then cleanse your face with the wipe, rinse it again and wipe over the skin once more to remove the product.
I can’t say I was expecting very much from this product because I don’t find that makeup remover wipes work very well and just assumed that this would be similar. It turns out that I couldn’t be more wrong, they’re actually nothing like a typical makeup wipe. Daily Facials removed all of my makeup very easily and quickly. The thing that surprised me even more is that they really improve the texture of my skin leaving it soft and smooth.
I even tested the wipes as part of my morning routine and tried missing out my moisturiser to see how it would affect my makeup application. I definitely agree with their claims of the cloths being moisturising because my makeup went on just as easily as when I have applied moisturiser! I would recommend them to anyone who likes a really simple skincare routine.
Daily Facials are currently retailing for £6.99 on the Superdrug website. You get 30 wipes and Olay recommend using them morning and evening. I’m not sure if it’s just me being stingy but the price seems quite steep for a two week supply! I guess you’re paying for the convenience of the product as well as the fact that they’re multipurpose.
Aside from the price-point, my main concern about this product is the fact that, in the UK, we have become obsessed with single use wet wipes which are majorly clogging up our sewer systems (just google ‘fatbergs’!) and I’m guessing these wipes will be just as bad. I’ve checked the packaging to see whether they’re biodegradable and couldn’t find anything other than a warning not to flush so my guess is that they aren’t. Admittedly, the warning should be enough because the main problem is with people flushing them down the toilet, so people need to stop being so careless and dispose of them correctly.
I still feel that brands should be doing more to produce biodegradable wipes, keeping in mind how many are being used on a daily basis. I have tried contacting Olay to see if they can shed more light on the environmental impact of these wipes but haven’t yet heard back. If they respond, I’ll add an update.
Update 18/10/18: It has been one week since I contacted Olay (via Instagram) to ask whether the cloths are biodegradable and they have not responded, make of that what you will!
